Homelessness: Knowledge at Work is the first in a series of online core curricula for service providers. This 12-unit online curriculum covers a range of topics that are important for anyone working with people experiencing homelessness. Units can be completed at your own pace and consist of illustrated slides, background readings, audio and video clips, activities, and quiz questions. You can take the entire curriculum or individual units. You may also combine online instruction with other training methods including webcasts and face-to-face instruction. We provide continuing education credit for each unit.

This unit provides an historical perspective of homelessness in the US, a discussion of current trends in how we respond, and a view of the future as we work as a nation not just to manage homelessness, but to end it.

Here we address definitions and root causes of homelessness as well as the numbers and, diversity of people who experience homelessness each night and over the course of a year.
Unit 3 $45.00 Homeless Children: America’s Youngest Outcasts
Building on work by The National Center on Family Homelessness, this unit describes the characteristics and experiences of homeless children and offers guidance on how communities and service providers can respond effectively.
Unit 4 $45.00 Across the Generations: Families without Homes
For the past two decades, families have been among the fastest growing groups in the homeless population. This unit discusses causes, unique needs, and effective ways of responding to family homelessness.
Unit 5 $45.00 Homeless Youth: Alone and Adrift
Young people become homeless for a variety of reasons including running away from home, aging out of foster care, being rejected by family because of gender identity or sexual orientation. This unit explores the unique nature of youth homelessness and strategies for engaging young people.

Veterans make up one third of homeless individuals. High rates of unemployment, struggles with mental health issues and physical disabilities, and challenges reintegrating into civilian life only increase the risk of homelessness. This unit explores homelessness among veterans and models for providing community-based supports.

Ending homelessness is an approach that has recently gained momentum in communities across the country. This unit examines best practices and emerging trends in Housing First and Rapid Re-Housing, as well as the range of supportive services necessary to keep people stably housed once they exit homelessness.
Unit 8 $45.00 Step by Step: Case Management Competencies
Case management is a critical component of the homeless service system of care. Based on the Community Support Skills Standards, this unit identifies and presents core competencies for case managers working in homeless services
Unit 9 $45.00 Motivational Interviewing: Changing the Conversation
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based practice that is widely used in health care, mental health and substance abuse treatment. This unit gives participants an overview of the spirit and skills of MI and its effectiveness in homeless service settings.
Unit 10 $45.00 Double Edge: Understanding Homelessness and Trauma
Many people have experienced trauma before they become homeless, and homelessness itself is a traumatic event. Double Edge helps participants better understand connections between homelessness and trauma and how to respond appropriately.
Unit 11 $45.00 Critical Time Intervention: Focused, Time-Limited Case Management
Critical Time Intervention (CTI) is a focused, time-limited approach designed to support people as they transition from homelessness back into the community. This unit explores the phases of CTI, the role of the CTI team, and the research that supports this evidence-based practice.
Unit 12 $45.00 Self Care: Don’t Forget to Breathe
Stress. Burnout. Turnover. Staff working in homeless services is often over-worked and underpaid. The work is hard. The stories are overwhelming. This unit provides strategies for staff self-care and creating healthy work environments.
